Alvin Davis Biography

Alvin Davis is one of the most popular and richest Baseball Player who was born on September 9, 1960 in Riverside, California, United States. With 47 games, Davis holds the Mariners’ record for most consecutive games reached base in a single season. Davis was well-liked by Mariners fans and held the majority of the young team’s offensive records up until the arrival of Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez and Alex Rodriguez. He was highly respected by his fellow players. Ed Vande Berg, a teammate, stated in 1984 that “You know sooner than later we’re going for some runs.” “We have mister all on the offense–Mr. Alvin Davis. Tommy John described him as a “modern day George Scott” and explained, “When Scott first entered the league, nobody knew how to pitch to them, and they didn’t discover that for three years.”

Davis’ season high for home runs was 29 in 1987 and his most RBI (116) came as a rookie in 1984. His highest batting average for a season was .305 in 1989.

With the addition of Pete O’Brien in 1990, Davis was increasingly used as Seattle’s designated hitter. He only saw action on defense as a first baseman in 52 games that season, further reduced to just 14 games in 1991. His batting average fell to .221 in 1991 with 12 home runs; with young Tino Martinez in the organization, Davis was not in the team’s plans for 1992.

In June 1982, Davis, who had just finished his senior season at ASU, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners (6th round, 138th overall). He played the remainder of the season in Double A, Massachusetts, for the Lynn Sailors in Eastern League. In 1983, Davis was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the sixth round (138th overall). He continued at this level with the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern League. He hit.296 and had 18 home runs. He also nearly averaged one walk per game.

Davis, the youngest of four children, was born in Riverside, California. Davis graduated from John W. North High School, graduating in 1978 after his father’s death in 1970. The San Francisco Giants selected him in the 1978 Major League Baseball Draft. However, he chose to play college baseball at Arizona State University in Tempe. Davis, who was left-handed but could throw right-handed and batted, was later selected by the Oakland Athletics sixth round in 1981. However, he decided to continue college and earn a degree as a financial analyst.

Davis began the 1984 season in Triple-A, with the Salt Lake City Gulls of the Pacific Coast League. After just one game, he was promoted to the majors, due to a hand injury to Ken Phelps on April 6, and Davis remained with Seattle for eight seasons, through 1991. In that only game for Salt Lake, he went two-for-three with a walk, and never returned to the minors.
